Physical Description:

Lanky, with slender wings and very long tail; orange rump and double black breastband. Brown above and white below; blackish bill. Black legs and feet.

Habitat:

Open country, plowed fields, golf courses, and short grass prairies.

Feeding Habits:

Alternately runs, then stands still as if to look and listen, then suddenly picks at the ground with its bill.

Killdeer eat 98% insects: beetles, cotton-boll weevils, grasshoppers, caterpillars, ants, dragonflies, worms, snails, crabs.

Nest:

A slight depression or scrape sparsely lined with grass on bare ground.

4 pale buff, spotted eggs.

 

Both parents attend the brood.

Young first fly about 25 days after hatching.

Some parents raise two broods per year.




      When the nest is approached, adult feigns injury, hobbling along with wings dragging as if badly wounded........

.........This behavior often succeeds in luring a predator away from the eggs or young; the bird then "recovers" and flies off calling very loudly!
